Indian Navy is one of the main defense line of India, and as you may now that this wing mainly deals in operations and task related to the seas and ocean. Indian navy offers a wide range of career and job opportunities for aspiring candidates. The navy is filled with challenges, and one of the main reasons that makes it more challenging then other defense jobs is that one has to remain in sea for a long time. And quite often it can make you sick if not handled properly.
In this article we have tried to present all the aspects of joining the Indian navy, including different posts and ranks, their type of work, eligibility criteria etc. So let’s dive in.
Starting with the posts and ranks, the jobs in Indian navy can be divided in three categories: Commissioned Officer, Junior Commissioned Officer and non-commissioned officers.
Indian Navy Career For Commissioned Officer
Commissioned officers are simply the officers posts in navy i.e they will have men under their command and will lead them. Remember when someone asked “you what you want to become when you grow up” and then you would reply “i want to become an officer”, the commissioned officer is the thing you wanted to become.
Eligibility Criteria For Commissioned Officer In Indian Navy
Their are various ways through which you can join Indian navy as an officer. Here are some of the common ways and the eligibility criteria needed:-
1: Join Indian navy via NDA/NA (National Defence Academy / Naval Academy) exam: One of the best ways to join navy is cracking the NDA/NA exams. The good thing is that you can appear for this exam directly after 10+2 and join the navy at early age. Following are the eligibility criteria to apply for NDA/NA exam.
Age Limit : 16.5 to 19 years
Educational Qualifications : 10 + 2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math/biology
2: Join Indian navy via CDS (Combined Defence Services) exam: For graduates who are looking forward becoming an officer in Navy or any other defense wing, CDSE is their best shot. Make sure you comply with the undermentioned.
Age limit: 19 to 22 years
Educational Qualifications : Graduation in Engineering (any stream)
3: Join Indian Navy via UES (University Entry Scheme): Students who are in 7th or 8th semester of Engineering studying in an AICTE approved university can directly go for SSB. A specially assigned team visits all the AICTE universities and pic the eligible candidates.
Age limit : 19 – 25 years
Educational Qualification : Should be in the final year of engineering, and should have scored at least 60% on aggregate up-till the second last year.
4: Join Indian Navy via NCC special entry scheme: For graduates who have scored minimum 50% in graduation and has a NCC ‘C’ certificate can apply for NCC special Entry scheme. With this scheme one can directly go for SSB interview.
Age limit: 19 – 25 years
Educational qualifications: graduation with minimum 50% marks, Should have NCC ‘C’ certificate with minimum ‘B’ grade and should have served at least 2 years in senior wing.
5: Join Indian Navy via TES (Technical Entry Scheme): For 10+2 passed out students who have scored minimum 70% with PCM stream, TES provides a direct entry to SSB interview.
Age Limit : 16.5 to 19 years
Educational qualifications: Intermediate Pass with 70% or more in PCM stream.

Indian Navy Jobs As Sailor
Junior commissioned officer are the ordinary ranked personnel who serves under the commissioned officers. If commissioned officers are managers, then junior commissioned officers are employees. all the task and operations are performed by these men and are also known as sailors.
Eligibility Criteria For Sailors In Indian Navy
One can apply for different posts of sailor in different fields. Each sailor post has it’s own challenges and advantages and need specific eligibility criteria to be filled. Following are the different posts and their required eligibility.
1: Indian navy job as artificer apprentice: The term “artificer” means a skillful mechanic, this term alone explains this post. As an artificer there are no specific roles assigned. Though the main task of an artificer is to maintain the equipment and machinery of navy, but the type of work will depend on the rank and field you sent after completing the training period.
Age Limit : 17 to 20 years
Educational qualifications: The applicant must have scored 60% or more in class 12th with physics, math and any of the following subject chemistry, Biology or computer science.
2: Indian navy job as senior secondary recruit (SSR): The SSR is almost same as that of AA. Even the syllabus and eligibility criteria as same for both SSR and AA. The major difference between both the posts is the type of work and rank. AA is more of a technical posts and is considered as higher rank than SSR. The exam difficulty level of AA is also more than SSR.
The age limit and educational qualifications are same for SSR as AA.
3. Indian navy job as Matric Recruit (MR) : The navy needs people who can take care of taks like cooking, cleaning and other important things. And for this purpose, they recruit people for MR post. The eligibility criteria of MR are more flexible than any other post.
Age limit: 17 to 21 years
Educational qualification: Applicant must be at least 10th pass.
4. Indian navy job as Musician MR: If you have talent and experience in music than this post will suit you the best. As being a naval musician you will play in various ceremony and gala events of navy.
Age limit: 17 to 21 years
Educational qualification: 10th pass, should have basic knowledge in theory of Music.
5. Indian navy job as tradesman mate: The job of tradesman mate is to assist Indian navy in the cleaning and other chores. This means that if you are selected as tradesman mate that you are not a navy personnel, instead you will be referred as civilian personnel.
Age limit : 18 to 25 years
Educational qualification: 10th passed from a recognized board.
